Penelope J. E. Davies is Associate Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. She is a scholar of Greek and Roman art and architecture as well as a field archaeologist. Frima Fox Hofrichter is Professor and former Chair of the History of Art and Design department at Pratt Institute. She is author of Judith Leyster, A Dutch Artist in Holland’s Golden Age, which received CAA’s Millard Meiss Publication Fund Award. Joseph Jacobs is an independent scholar, critic, and art historian of modern art in New York City. He was the curator of modern art at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, director of the Oklahoma City Art Museum, and curator of American art at The Newark Museum, Newark, New Jersey. David L. Simon is Jetté Professor of Art at Colby College, where he received the Basset Teaching Award in 2005. Among his publications is the catalogue of Spanish and southern French Romanesque sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cloisters. Ann M. Roberts, Professor of Art at Lake Forest College has published essays, articles and reviews on both Northern and Italian Renaissance topics. Janson was a legendary name in art history. During his long career as a teacher and scholar, he helped define the discipline through his impressive books and other publications. Anthony F. This was the book I used in College. I loved it and dragged it around for years. I can't recall when I finally had to rid myself of it, or if it just got lost in a move. I probably had the first or second edition. That makes me laugh. It also makes me old. I would have loved to get the year I had, but they've made many changes and I'm assuming improvements. I started to read it and will in my spare time. Unfortunately I don't have that much and since it weighs almost what I do, carrying it around isn't an option. If you really love art and it you love understanding the world in it's context, then this is a book you'll love.
Large thick book with a very through history of Art. In reality, it's really a study of human history through the stories expressed through art. It has many large, high quality pictures of fine art from around the world, as well as pottery, architecture, and other disciplines. If you're not a student and just want to study, experience, or just to look at art, this is a great book for you. If you are a student, you're probably required to study this at some level of academia.
Very nice art history book for class. I didn't know what to expect when getting this. It turned out to be a fun learning experience. A lot of great historical and beautiful artwork that I haven't even seen before was in this book. I also like how they analyzed the artists and artwork. Very specific and professional detail in hear. Would recommend for any art historians out there.
Fantastic pricing for textbook. Condition of book was very good. The textbook itself is amazing such that I almost wish that I had bought it outright. A very impressive comprehensive study of Western Art. Still have a long way to go to incorporate more women, but they've made much progress since original publication.

I surely wish I could have afforded this book! I had to rent it for History of Art, Renaissance through Baroque, and just the chapters we have covered already have been amazing! The art us just amazing and makes me really, really wish I could keep it. But the price is waaay too much for a college student, almost even renting as I cannot use a bookstore voucher for it, for obvious reasons (had I been able to, I would have bought the book!)I sincerely plan on buying this book when I am out of school. My major is NOT art in any way, I am usually not interested at all. But my professor and THIS BOOK have really helped me and I want it on my coffee table to READ, not just look at the cover. Really great info in here! (LOL, I never even looked at the title of the book. I just was told Janson's, 8th edition. The name really says it all! No cave paintings in here that I've seen, just some really, really beautiful art -- including architecture!)
